2014년 10월에 개발이 착수되어 2023년 항공용 서비스 제공을 목표로 개발이 진행 중인 Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) 사업은 국제민간항공기구(ICAO, International Civil Aviation Organization) 및 항공무선기술위원회(RTCA, Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics) 등의 SBAS 관련 국제표준을 준수하여 시스템을 개발하고 있으며, 2020년 7월에 시스템 상세설계검토(CDR, Critical Design Review)가 완료되었다. 현재는 항공기가 각 공항과 주요 항공로 지점에 설치된 계기착륙시설(ILS)과 전방향표지 시설(VOR/DME) 등의 각종 전자장비를 이용하여 비행하고 있으나 향후에는 SBAS 만으로도 출발 공항에서 목적 공항까지 안전하게 비행이 가능하고 정밀접근 착륙도 가능하게 된 다. 또한 자동차, 철도, 선박 등의 교통수단뿐만 아니라 정보통신, 물류, 응급구조 등 다양한 분야에서 SBAS가 활용될 것으로 기대된다. 본 강연은 한국형 SBAS 개발 사업인 KASS 사업의 개요 및 개발 현황 소개를 통해 KASS 개발자 및 관련 기관 종사자뿐만 아니라 일반 국민들의 KASS 사업에 대한 이해도를 높이고 향후 KASS 활용을 통해 변화되는 다양한 우리사회 미래비전에 대한 관심을 증진시키는데 목적이 있다.

KASS Program Overview and Development Status Introduction

The Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) project, which began development in October 2014 and completed the System Critical Design Review (CDR) in July 2020, is under development with the aim of providing aviation services in 2023. The KASS is being developed in compliance with SBAS-related international standards published by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Aviation Radio Technology Commission (RTCA). Currently, aircraft are flying using various electronic equipment such as the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and the VHF omni-directional radio range/Distance Measurement Equipment (VOR/DME) installed at each airport and major air routes. However, in the future, it will be able to safely fly from the departure airport to the destination airport using only SBAS, and precision approach landing will be possible. In addition, SBAS is expected to be used in various fields such as information communication, logistics, emergency rescue, as well as transportation means such as automobiles, railroads, and ships. The purpose of this lecture is to enhance understanding of the KASS by introducing the overview of the KASS project and the status of development, and to increase interest in the future vision of our society that changes through the use of KASS in the future.
