Compact High Gain Antenna for High Frequency Satellite Communication Using a Thermal Control Structure

Ye-Bon Kim*, Eun-Taek Sung, Seunghwa Jung, Sanguk Lee, Yoola Hwang

This paper proposes a compact high gain antenna design method for satellite communication systems operating in high-frequency bands. To support high data throughput, conventional systems typically employ large antenna arrays and beamforming networks, which increase system complexity and payload size. To address this limitation, this study proposes an antenna structure that enhances radiation performance by utilizing the reflective characteristics of a thermal control structure surrounding the antenna. By manipulating the propagation path of electromagnetic waves and concentrating the radiation pattern, the proposed design enables improved gain performance even with a single patch antenna element. Simulation results at 28 GHz show that the proposed antenna achieves approximately 3.5 dB gain improvement compared with a reference (conventional) patch antenna, providing a realized gain of about 10.5 dBi. These results demonstrate that enhanced radiation performance can be achieved without employing large antenna arrays, suggesting that the proposed structure can serve as a promising design approach for compact and efficient satellite payload antenna systems. Keywords: satellite communication antenna, compact antenna, high gain antenna
