Since Google announced that it provides Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) raw measurements from Android Nougat Operation System (OS), many studies have been conducted to improve the positioning performance of smartphones. However, in the case of the low-cost GNSS chip installed in a smartphone, it only supports a single-frequency, and there is a limit to application high-precision positioning technologies such as Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) and Precise Point Positioning (PPP). In September 2017, Broadcom, a leading GNSS chip manufacturer, announced the BCM 47755, which supports multi-constellations (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and QZSS) and dual-frequency (L1/E1 and L5/E5), and researchers in the GNSS field paid attention. Since then, it has been possible to estimate the ionospheric delay and multipath error by using the dual-frequency Android measurements, and for this reason, many studies continue to be excessively optimistic about the application of high-precision positioning technology in the smartphones. However, since Android smartphones are structurally different from general commercial receivers such as low quality LP antennas, frequent cycle slips due to low-cost GNSS chip mounting, and duty cycle issues, the quality of GNSS raw measurements is very poor and problems arise when general positioning technology is applied as it is. Therefore, in this paper, we explain how to use L5 measurements and correction method in consideration of the limitations inherent in smartphones, and present a weighting and filtering technique for practical strategies that utilize doppler measurement instead of carrier-phase measurement. In addition, it describes how to improve the positioning performance of the optimal Android smart device through the results of applying L5 Differential GNSS (DGNSS), Hatch-filter, and Kalman-filter through a field experiment.
