Indoor Precise Localization Technology Based on 2D Surface Correlation Using Few Bluetooth Signal Sources

We propose a precise localization technology based on 2D surface correlation method in indoors where very few Bluetooth beacons are installed. The surface correlation method is based on the conventional fingerprinting method. In the case of the conventional fingerprinting method, a number of RF signal sources are installed to improve location discernment for Received Signal Strength (RSS). However, this increases the difficulty of managing signal source and the maintenance cost of the fingerprinting database. To solve these problems, the surface, which is a spatial RSS pattern, is used for the fingerprinting. The conventional fingerprinting method utilizes instantaneous RSS measurement for localization so, the location discernment is poor. Otherwise, the proposed technology utilizes a spatial RSS pattern generated from Pedestrian Dead-Reckoning (PDR) so, it shows higher location discernment than the conventional fingerprinting method. By utilizing such a spatial pattern, the proposed technology can provide accurate location information even with a very small number of RF signal sources. However, the trajectory information generated from the PDR may cause pattern distortion due to a drift error. To solve this problem, the proposed technology performs PDR trajectory correction using the crossroad information on the map. Through this correction, the proposed technology can maintain highly accurate performance without pattern distortion even when walking for a long time. To verify the performance of the proposed technology, we installed seven Bluetooth beacons on the first floor of the main branch of Lotte department store in Myeong-dong. The proposed technology showed a 1.4 m location error with all seven beacons. As a result of calculating the localization error by reducing the number of installed beacons to three, it was confirmed that the maximum error was 2.6 m. Through the comparison with the conventional kNN-based fingerprinting method and Particle Filter-based localization technology, it was confirmed that the proposed technology can provide very accurate location information with only a very small number of RF signal sources.
